“Your one good leg is broken and strung up to the ceiling.” Humor threaded through his husky voice.
“Very funny, Yvan.”
“I’m sorry…I’m sorry about Rubi. She might have been evil, but she was your sister.”
“She was.” Rae tried to find one good thing to hold on to about Rubi, but she couldn’t.
“Think about when you were kids. When you would play together and didn’t know what jealousy or evil was. That was Rubi. The loving sister. Forget about the person she grew up to be.”
“I’m pregnant.”
“Is it….”
“Twins? No, it’s not.”
Rae saw relief flood his face. Then he smiled. Yvan got off his bed and stood beside hers. He laid his hand on her belly and caressed it. He then kissed it before laying his head down on it.
“I will always protect you, and I will always love you. You and your hundreds of children.”
“Hundreds? I only want six.” Rae laughed and it felt good to hear that sound. It was the happiness and joy that she had almost died for today.

Rae laid her sister Rubi to rest in the D’Alessandro private plots. She closed her eyes and she could see the sunlight bounce off Rubi’s dark curls as she ran. Her white dress danced with the cool breeze. She looked no more than five years old, her chubby cheeks taking on a rosy, pink hue. Her squeal of laughter filled the air. Rubi hugged Rae and planted a kiss on her cheek. They laughed and chased each other around the yard one more time. This was the Rubi she chose to remember.
